February 2017 Advocate of the Month
Our Advocate of the Month for February 2017 is Sherri Thomas. Sherri has worked in our Mobile office since February 12, 2012. Her practice covers a wide range of cases including consumer law, housing law and claims related to the BP oil spill. Before coming to LSA, Sherri worked as an AmeriCorps Vista fellow at Hands on Atlanta where she ran a VITA clinic preparing and filing taxes for low income clients. She also screened clients for eligibility for public benefits such as food stamps, WIC, Medicare and free childcare programs. During law school, she interned at the Georgia Public Defender's office and was a certified legal intern at a DV clinic. Sherri is an active member of the bar and various civic organizations in Mobile.
In February, Sherri saved the home of a single mother and her two daughters after our client lost her job. It turned out the landlord was prematurely trying to evict our client while still collecting section 8 vouchers on her behalf; Sherri got the eviction dismissed, and this single mom still has a roof over her family. Sherri stopped a garnishment when she was able to prove that our client was never actually served with the garnishment notice. Sherri also recovered payment for a client who had been waiting four years to get compensated for injuries and medical problems caused by the BP oil spill : this individual was an immigrant who struggled to read and write English, and whose language barrier had kept him from getting legal help.
In each instance, Sherri’s client seemed to have run out of options. She gave them all a diligent, resourceful lawyer who knew how to keep digging and how to find the right answers. Congratulations Sherri, and keep fighting for people who need help!
