LSA has released its 2011 Annual Report:
Service in the Face of Disaster
"Alabama has seen more than its fair share of disasters during the last few years. When Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana many families fled to Alabama. Legal Services Alabama (LSA) quickly responded by setting up call centers to aid the displaced families who had lost all in the wake of Katrina. Then the BP Oil Spill catastrophe devastated Alabama’s wetlands, beaches and the business community in Baldwin and Mobile counties. LSA continues to help people who were denied claims from the BP Oil Spill. As if things could not get worse, tornadoes ripped through Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and across the state last April. The tornadoes left many homeless and in need of help with FEMA and insurance claims. LSA responded and partnered with other organizations to provide assistance to affected families.
LSA was formed in January 2004 as a result of the merger of three predecessor organizations. The mission of LSA is to provide high quality free civil legal assistance to citizens in all 67 counties who could not afford an attorney. Today with over 100 attorneys, paralegals and support staff LSA remains committed to making a difference in the lives of Alabamians by standing firm on its mission of high quality access to justice to citizens who cannot afford an attorney."
